Waste Management


Years together Steel plants generates waste – part of is currently in use but majority is still untouched. In every steel plants – thousand to million tons of waste is generated and dumped inside the plant. Some of this use for Land fill but certain waste is highly acidic such as Induction furnace slags. A brief summary of details of waste generation and possible mitigation:  
=> Mini mills with DRI-EAF -Billet caster and Rebar/ Section / Wire rod roiling :
The 1-1.5mtpa complex generates considerable amount of waste in the form of Material Handing Dust, DRI fines dust, Sludges, EAF de-dusting dust, Billet Caster & Rolling mill scales. While ‘dry’ scales are used in Sintering process and sold as commodity, Part of Sludge is re-used and sold – GCP dust for a mini mills is the concern:

=>BF -BOF mills situation is better as part of plant waste is re-used in Sintering. GCP dust is re-used and beneficiated with Iron ore, Part of BOF slag is used in Sintering, BF slag is today’s ‘Gold’ and one of the main ingredient for Cement.
 
=>Induction Furnace slags are of main concern as it is ‘ACIDIC’ in nature, ‘black slags’ can also be used.
 
=>EAF dust and Induction Furnace dust is processed to generate the value added Zinc and other Non-Ferrous Metals through a dedicated process.
 
=>EAF dust to Non Ferrous metals recovery plants does not require high capex. Only small land area is required. A 5t per hour Dust recovery plant can generate over net U$ 10-15000 per day from Sale of products.
